People discovered that DMSO could protect cells from freezing damage in the 1950s. DMSO was hailed as a miracle cure in the 1960s and clinical trials began. The FDA found an excuse to reject DMSO use when a study in 1965 found that giving enormous amounts to dogs, rabbits and pigs may have caused small, insignificant changes in the animals' eye lens. The changes caused mild nearsightedness after six months that did not affect the animals' lives. No evidence of cataracts has been seen in tests with humans, or since with animals, and all changes disappeared after the huge amounts of DMSO were no longer used.
Despite this "compelling" evidence of "safety" concerns, DMSO was approved for use on horses and dogs in the 1970s. It is also used as a prescription medication for bladder inflammation in people. So what happened to the safety concerns? Many people use DMSO for muscle and joint pain today. People have reported amazing results, such as the overnight healing of a sprained wrist and twisted knee that allowed a woman skier to win a gold medal the next day at the Chile Winter Olympics. Some alternative cancer centers use it too with great success.
DMSO and cancer
DMSO supporters say that the product can perform miracles for cancer. There is evidence that DMSO can cause cancerous cells to become benign. DMSO can pass through human skin like water and enter cells. It can also stop or slow the development of cancers, such as breast, skin, bladder, colon, and ovarian cancer. Some people use it for cancer prevention. DMSO is used to help patients in withdraw from conventional cancer treatment and is promoted as an immune system booster.Cancer centers use DMSO to protect healthy cells from chemotherapy and to decrease side effects from the deadly drugs. The DMSO Potentiation Therapy uses DMSO to allow chemotherapy to target cancer cells. This allows doctors to use extremely small doses of chemo, which lowers profits for the drug companies. No doubt the use of DMSO with conventional treatment, or better yet with other natural cures, is blocked because of the effect on drug profits.
